Many companies offer gold storage services using allocated gold, whereby the client has the right of ownership to a certain quantity of gold held by the company, but it may only exist as part of a larger bar that is co-owned by many other clients. As such this poses inherent risks when and if delivery should be required. Unallocated gold simply gives the client title to a certain quantity of gold held by the company but it may or may not exist in physical form, you simply become a creditor of the company. As such this poses significant counter-party risk.
